SMRT Trains Uplifts Rail Reliability with
Track Access Management System

Background

SMRT Trains is the first and largest train services provider in Singapore. As a subsidiary of SMRT Corporation Ltd, they manage and operate train services on the North-South Line, East-West Line, the Circle Line, the new Thomson-East Coast Line and the Bukit Panjang Light Rail Transit. SMRT is committed to provide safe, reliable and comfortable service for commuters in Singapore.

Challenges

As the pioneer Mass Rapid Transit operator in Singapore, SMRT Trains serves more than 2 million passenger trips every day. Some of the railway lines operated by SMRT are amongst the oldest in the country and require constant maintenance work, which have been given limited and insufficient time in between rail operating hours. In addition, maintenance tasks are scheduled through disparate systems, excel worksheets and regular in-person meetings, which are time-consuming and susceptible to errors.

Through the implementation of the Track Access Management System by PCCW Solutions, we can optimise the use of limited engineering hours for higher productivity and enhance safety in the maintenance regimen. SMRT Trains has extended the deployment to other train lines and depots to reap further productivity gains.

Solutions

PCCW Solutions is selected to develop the Track Access Management System (TAMS) for SMRT Trains. The TAMS is a digital solution to digitalise and automate track access allocation for the regular maintenance and planning of engineering works. TAMS is equipped with AI and analytics capability to optimise track access allocation planning and has built-in safety rules to conduct conflict checks on each scheduled track access request against safety requirements. It can provide real-time updates of track allocation status and access progress with dashboard reporting.

Value created

The TAMS has been fully rolled out to the North-South and East-West Lines, Singapore’s oldest MRT lines. The implementation of TAMS has saved SMRT Trains 30,000 manhours per year and contributed to increased rail reliability. The TAMS serves as a holistic digital platform to enhance productivity and rail maintainability through a more efficient and optimised track access management, providing end-to-end workflow visibility while maintaining high safety standards for all stakeholders.
