The Transport Department is the authority for administering the Road Traffic Ordinance and legislation for the management of road traffic, regulation of public transport services and operation of major transport infrastructures in Hong Kong. Challenges
The first Transport Information System (TIS) of the Transport Department was implemented by PCCW Solutions in 2008 as an expandable central data repository for storing and maintaining transport and traffic data, in order to unify the business functions into a standardised browser-based user interface. The Transport Department needed to modernise and upgrade its existing TIS to enhance system performance, streamline day-to-day operations, and enable more efficient processing of a vast amount of traffic and transport data using advanced technologies, so as to synchronise with the HKSAR Government’s smart city initiative.

Solutions
PCCW Solutions was selected as the prime contractor to design, implement and maintain the advanced TIS in 2017. The new TIS makes use of the latest information technologies, such as big data analytics to capture and process both textual and spatial data integrated with Geographical Information System (GIS) for managing traffic flow, and enabling real-time traffic condition prediction in Hong Kong. The modernised TIS enables efficient processing of a vast amount of real-time traffic and transport data to facilitate and streamline day-to-day operations of the Transport Department.
